Tottenham transfer target Christian Eriksen is keen to follow the example set by former-Ajax star Jan Vertonghen by replicating the Belgian's consistency before moving on to another club.

The Denmark international was a teammate of Vertonghen at Ajax, before Vertonghen made the move to Tottenham in the summer.

And Eriksen has insisted he will only be ready to make a similar move once he has demonstrated the same level of consistent performance in Holland.

Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Eriksen said: "Jan Vertonghen is a good example for me. Last season he played a few bad matches before Christmas as well, but after the winter break he was extremely good every game.

"I have to show every week that I'm the best. Only when you don't have anything to learn in Holland, you have to think about a transfer."

The 20-year-old has been linked with Tottenham, and recent reports on suggested Spurs have made an enquiry about the Dane's availability with a view to a summer move.

Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas brought in Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer, after he sanctioned the sale of Rafael Van der Vaart.

The Iceland and USA internationals would likely compete for a starting berth with Eriksen, should the Denmark international follow Vertonghen in making the move from Ajax to Spurs. The Dane is rated as one of the world's most exciting young players, and helped his Ajax team to beat Manchester City 3-1 earlier last month, before earning a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
