Arsenal are believed to have revived their interest in Montpellier captain and reported Chelsea target Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, after the Ligue 1 side's Champions League elimination, according to the London Metro.

The 23-year-old France international shot to fame last season after leading his team to the domestic title, and has attracted attention from a number of clubs including Serie A giants AC Milan.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of Yanga-Mbiwa, and is considering an attempt to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in January, as he bids to strengthen Arsenal's defence.

Chelsea have also been linked with a move for the versatile defender, prior to the Stamford Bridge sacking of Roberto Di Matteo. But, with interim manager Rafa Benitez now at the helm, it's unclear whether the Blues still retain their interest.

Yanga-Mbiwa is under contract with Montpellier until 2015, but has refused to commit his long-term future to the club following their early Champions League exit.

Arsenal have continued their intense scouting of the player this season, and remain the favourites to secure his signature ahead of Chelsea and AC Milan, with an cut-price offer expected in the New Year.
