Cristiano Ronaldo is rarely upstaged at Real Madrid but that is precisely what happened when Mesut Ozil dictated a comeback victory for Jose Mourinho’s side on Saturday night – winning it with a beauty of a free-kick.

Real Madrid were in danger of losing even more ground on rivals Barcelona in the bid to defend their La Liga title and had to come from behind twice before the Germany international decided things in such an exquisite manner.

Former Manchester United striker Manucho had given Real Valladolid a shock lead early on, but France international Karim Benzema replied swiftly to level and many expected the champions to go on and win the game.

It didn’t happen however and Manucho was there again to put the home side ahead for a second time and the reaction wasn’t quite so quick.

Mourinho would have been sweating as half-time approached, but Ozil gave los Blancos, who were actually wearing green, something to smile about at the break when he finished a delightful one-touch passing move.

Vallodolid were resilient in the second half and with Cristiano Ronaldo more subdued than usual, the most notable thing he did was get booked for dissent, they could be forgiven for hoping to hold on.

But Ozil had other ideas and soon after Ronaldo’s booking he pulled off the match’s best bit of quality to decide it.

A free-kick 25 yards from goal is usually the domain of Ronaldo, but Ozil felt it was his day and curled in an absolutely brilliant left-footed shot to win it for Real Madrid.
