The waiting was over on Sunday night as Barcelona star Lionel Messi made history by breaking the record for goals scored in a calendar year.

The previous record was held by German striker Gerd Muller and was set 40 years ago in 1972 with a tally of 85 fro club and country.

Real Betis were Barcelona’s opponents as Messi made history; he was one behind Muller but need less than half an hour to get one further.

The first was a solo effort, with him running at the defence and exploiting space made by forward runners to get into the box and bury left-footed into the far corner.

The Catalan club did not have to wait long for the landmark strike as Messi once again ran at the back four before passing onto Andres Iniesta and the Spain international gave it back to him with a cute back heel to be fired into the same corner as the first.

It was not only about the record being broken, Messi’s goals were crucial in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory after a stern test from Betis.

It was clinical finishing from Messi and exemplified why he has reached such an incredible milestone in 2012, playing some of the most exhilarating football ever seen.

If there were still some people that doubted whether he was one of the greatest ever, they must surely have had their minds changed now.
