Ex-Chelsea boss backs Fernando Torres to get back to his best

Avram Grant believes Fernando Torres can return to his brilliant best – but only if the Chelsea striker sorts his mindset out, reports talkSPORT.

The Spaniard has struggled to rediscover the form that prompted the Blues to pay Liverpool £50million to bring him to west London in January 2011, with many now calling the ??-year-old high-profile flop.

However, former Stamford Bridge boss Grant believes the main issue relates to Torres' confidence, and that a run of Chelsea goals will help him to rediscover his goalscoring form.

"It all depends on what Fernando [Torres] wants," he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show. "He needs to start doing his job.

"He's running everywhere except into the box, which is his strength. It's not an easy time for him, but it happens to everybody."

Grant compared Torres' barren run to that of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, who endured a similarly modest spell during his time in charge, after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

"It happened to Didier Drogba and others," he added. "He's still a great player and a great finisher but he needs to concentrate on his strengths.

"I don't think that a player changes a lot in just a couple of years. He still has the quality but needs to work on the psychological part."

Roberto Di Matteo's decision to drop Torres for the recent Champions League defeat against Juventus is believed to have played a part in his acrimonious departure last week.

Roman Abramovich opted to bring in Rafael Bentiez on an interim basis, with the Spanish coach having worked with the out-of-sorts striker during his time at Anfield.

However, even he has admitted that Torres is not the same player as the one he first brought to England in 2007. Watch the video above to see Benitez's comments.
