Manchester City star Sergio Aguero beat out a host of Premier League stars to race with Formula One ace Nico Rosberg around a top circuit - and almost beat him!

The Argentina international is pretty quick around the pitch, but proved his pace around the circuit when he took part in the Puma Race Off challenge at a Leicestershire track.

Aguero beat a host of Premier League challengers, including Arsenal's Bacary Sagna, Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas, Manchester United's Phil Jones and Michael Carrick, and former-teammate Nigel De Jong, to post a top lap time of 01:22:58 in a simulated race around the legendary F1 circuit at Monza.

That time was just a second and a half behind Mercedes Formula One star Nico Rosberg's best time of 01:21:05, suggesting Aguero has what it takes to reach the top on the track.

The Manchester City star's time saw him rewarded with a tutorial session with Rosberg himself in Leicestershire, driving a Mercedes C 63 AMG, before the German race driver showed Aguero how it's done with a high-octane lap in a Mercedes AMG DTM.

The top-of-the-range AMG DTM is often used as a safety car in professional races, and with a top speed of 186mph, it can certainly shift around the track.

Afterwards, Aguero said in the Daily Mail: "For sure I would be able to drive a real Formula One car. The simulator was accurate, and while it doesn't move, I think my skills were there for all to see.

"Maybe I would not be quite as quick as Rosberg, but he has had more practice than me. In time, I might even be quicker.

"I think if I hadn't become a professional footballer I would have liked to be a motor racing driver."

And Rosberg - who sits ninth in the Formula One championship, ahead of seven-time world champion teammate Michael Schumacher - was suitably impressed by Aguero's skills behind the wheel.

"Sergio sure has some talent to drive a racing car. Maybe there's even some similarities in the sports," Rosberg said in The Sun.

"With soccer there's some foot-eye co-ordination and I'm sure that's similar genes to what you need to be a successful racing driver.

"But I didn't want him getting too cocky so I enjoyed showing him what I could do in the Mercedes AMG DTM car.

"Now he knows what real racing is all about."
