Arsenal star set to sign £20m new contract

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere is set to sign a new £20m five-year contract, handing a huge boost to under-fire Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, according to the Daily Mail.

The England international is ready to commit his long-term future to the club that gave him his Premier League start, and Wilshere is reportedly confident that the next generation of Gunners' youngsters are good enough to end Arsenal's seven-and-a-half-year wait for a major trophy.

The 20-year-old - widely regarded as England's most promising young talent - is on the verge of agreeing terms on a new £80,000 deal, with staggered pay rises, according to the report.

The Daily Mail also claims Wilshere wants to captain the side one day, giving further indication of his desire to stay with Arsenal for years to come.

Wenger will surely hope other Arsenal stars follow Wilshere's lead and commit their futures to the club, and teenage midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to be among the first to put pen to paper.

Wilshere said: "I'm talking to the club and I will probably be committing my future to them in the next couple of weeks. I know the team are going through a bad spell at the moment but that's like any team. That's not a problem for me nor is it a problem if the fans are booing us. We have to change that ourselves."

The case of Wilshere stands in stark contrast to the ongoing Theo Walcott contract saga. Wilshere's fellow England and Arsenal teammate has been locked in talks for most of the season, but no agreement has yet been forthcoming.

That leaves Wenger, and Arsenal, in a familiar position. Robin Van Persie, Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas have all left the club in recent seasons, and Gunners fans are reluctant to see another of the club's top players leave the Emirates Stadium.
