Tottenham midfielder aims to avoid Luke Modric comparison

Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele says he is keen to avoid being compared to the man he was bought in to replace over the summer, Luka Modric.

Modric finally secured his much-anticipated move to Real Madrid in August, with Spurs splashing £15 million to bring in Dembele from Fulham in order to fill the void left behind by the creative Croatian.

Despite playing in similar positions and the fact the Belgian international bears most the creative burden of Andre Villas-Boas’ Spurs side, he feels as though it's not right to compare the two players.

“Before I came to Tottenham I was a big fan of Modric. For me he was one of the best in England, but I am a totally different player,” he said.

“He had different qualities and I don’t feel I have to do exactly what he did.

“I play my own game. I try my best to be as important as he was and that would be a great achievement. But I’m not him.”

While Scott Parker made his first appearance of the season for Tottenham in their 1-0 win over Swansea on Sunday, it is unlikely that Dembele’s place is at risk given his status within the north London team.

A recent five week injury absence coincided with four defeats in five games for Tottenham, but Dembele insists that Parker’s return along with the presence of other players competing for a starting spot in midfield will keep him on his toes.

“(Parker's return is) very important. If you see him in training you can see he can be very important, he’s a very organised guy, very professional,” he said.

'He knows what he can do and I think he is an unbelievable player as well so it’s good for the team that there are a lot of rivals (in midfield) because it makes everybody sharp.

'I know if I play one bad game then Jake Livermore, Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone, Tom Carroll, there are a lot of good players who are behind me to come in and who can do well.

'So we have to keep playing and that keeps the level high in this team.'
