Ferguson rues missing out on Gazza

Sir Alex Ferguson insists he could have saved Paul Gascoigne from his troubles had the former England midfielder signed for Manchester United.

Ferguson tried to sign the star - who has twice been sectioned under the Mental Health Act - from Newcastle in 1988.

He told Sky Sports: "We had Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce, both Geordies, Gary Pallister, from Middlesbrough... they could have given him discipline."
