Jermain Defoe bagged a double but goalkeeper David James was the Portsmouth hero by saving a second half penalty from Wigan´s Ryan Taylor in a 2-0 win at Fratton Park.

Defoe, who has scored a club record of eight goals in seven games, struck after 33 minutes.

Chris Kirkland made a string of saves, notably from Hermann Hreidarsson and Niko Kranjcar, but James´ stop will be the one remembered along with another stunning save from substitute Antoine Sibierski with five minutes left. Then Defoe broke clear to coolly settle the game.
