Defoe strike denies Chelsea

Jermain Defoe´s debut goal for Portsmouth denied Chelsea a club record 10 wins in a row as Pompey secured a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park.

Defoe, a £7.5 million arrival from Tottenham on Thursday, struck from fellow new-boy Milan Baros´ nod-on to grab a 64th minute equaliser after Nicolas Anelka had elegantly slotted Chelsea ahead in a lightning breakaway nine minutes earlier. And Defoe was agonisingly just off target with three more chances to win it before the end.

Chelsea, though, battled hard and David James made fine saves from Juliano Belletti and Alex while Niko Kranjcar cleared off the line from Michael Ballack.
