Defender Paul McShane admits the pain of recent defeats could be just the wake-up call Sunderland need.

The Black Cats slipped back into the Barclays Premier League relegation zone with their 1-0 defeat at Blackburn on January 2, missing a penalty before Rovers took all the points with their own spot-kick.

"We need to start picking up points - we should have picked up points against Blackburn and it was disappointing, so Portsmouth (on Sunday) is quite an important game for us now," said McShane.
