FA confirm Owen compensation

Newcastle will receive compensation for Michael Owen´s latest injury woe - but the cash will not come out of Football Association coffers.

Owen has been ruled out for around four weeks with a thigh strain picked up during England´s friendly win over Austria on Friday and, under the FA´s comprehensive insurance policies, Newcastle can be reimbursed by up to £100,000 a week during Owen´s absence.

However, Soho Square officials have stressed the decision on what payments are eventually made is solely down to their insurers, who will foot the bill rather than the FA, in exactly the same way as any liability in a road accident would be paid for by the driver´s insurance company rather than the driver himself.
