Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is hopeful Michael Johnson will be able to play through a groin injury without the need for surgery.

It was feared Johnson would need an operation to cure the problem but Eriksson said he was remaining hopeful that course of action could be avoided.

"He´s been to see the specialist and for now we think that he´s going to have a special injection and hopefully that will be it," the Swede told the club´s website. "We are not talking about operating at this moment, so I hope he can start training on Monday, but we are not sure yet."
