Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has had a meeting with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola in New York.

According to The Sun, Guardiola has the Old Trafford club at the top of his list for his next job and the meeting between him and Ferguson will heighten speculation of him succeeding the Scot.

Guardiola left Camp Nou at the end of last season, citing a need to take a break from football management after winning 14 trophies in four years with the Catalan club.

The 41-year-old spent a year out in New York to recharge his batteries and the report claims Ferguson arranged a meeting during a short Christmas break with his wife.

Ferguson recently completed his 26th year at the helm of Manchester United and Guardiola could match the stature of manager that many believe is needed to replace him.

The report also claims Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is on the shortlist to replace Ferguson, but the 70-year-old favours current Everton manager David Moyes.
