Arsenal and Chelsea are being tipped to bid for Southampton’s highly-rated full-back Luke Shaw in the January transfer window.

According to the Daily Echo, Saints will wait until Shaw turns 18 in July of next year before offering him a contract and this will prompt bids from out of Emirates Stadium and Stamford Bridge.

Another product of the much-vaunted Southampton youth system, Shaw has shown great promise during the appearances he has made in the Premier League this season and becoming a more regular fixture in Nigel Adkins’ first team, so interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea is no surprise.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has indicated he is looking to build a team on a group of talented British youngsters and his reported interest in Shaw could be seen as him attempting to provide back-up to current first choice Kieran Gibbs.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are reportedly set to lose left-back Ashley Cole at the end of the season as the England international has yet to agree an extension to his current contract, which expires in the summer.

Shaw has made seven appearances in the league this season for Southampton, six of which were in the starting XI.
