Manchester United’s efforts to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski will get much more difficult as Inter Milan have joined the race to sign him.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been heavily linked with a move for the Poland international in recent months, but interest from Serie A has reportedly been growing and could spark a bidding war, according to The Mirror.

Lewandowski was Dortmund’s top scorer in their title-winning season last year and has begun this term in a similar vein, already notching nine times in 15 Bundesliga appearances.

The 24-year-old has a contract until 2014 but talks over an extension to this deal recently broke down, prompting further speculation of a bid out of Old Trafford and Dortmund admitted continuing failure to tie Lewandowski down to new terms could see them cash in before his value recedes too far or he is able to leave for free.

Manchester United were even reported to have already agreed a deal in principle for him, but Serie A champions Juventus were also credited with an interest and could lure him away from the Red Devils.

Ferguson has raided the German champions before, signing Shinji Kagawa in the summer, though the Japanese playmaker has been sidelined with a knee injury for the past six weeks.
