Ryan Giggs: Manchester City have become the new Arsenal

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs rates the Red Devils' resurgent rivalry with Manchester City on a par with that enjoyed against Arsenal when the Gunners were genuine contenders for the Premier League title.

Arsenal and Manchester United had countless feisty affairs from the late 90s into the mid-2000s, with the two clubs passionately vying for the league crown season after season.

The Gunners famously clinched the title at Old Trafford in 2002, while there were touchline spats and on-field dramas aplenty when the rivalry was at its most intense.

Chelsea's emergence as an English superpower added extra flavour to the mix at the top of the league, while Arsenal have fallen by the wayside since their Invincibles team was dismantled by Arsene Wenger.

Manchester City are very much the new kids on the block, and their big-spending allowed Roberto Mancini's side to pip Manchester United to the Premier League on the final day of last season.

Manchester United, though, exacted revenge of sorts over City last Sunday with a 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium, and Giggs believes the encounter had the hallmarks of a classic United-Arsenal clash.

"We had so many battles with Arsenal that were skilful games, but also physically tough, and I felt the game was like that on Sunday," Giggs told's exclusive podcast.

"It is two very good teams with the added spice that it’s a local derby. Over the last three years, each Manchester derby has intensified. The build-up is longer, people start talking about it earlier and the feeling when you win is even better.

"It was two quality sides, both in good form and going head to head at the top of the league. We took the first half and then City came back into life like we expected, but I thought we still looked dangerous and had goals in us during the second half.

"At 2-2, with City coming back into it, most people would’ve settled for a draw, but we score late goals so often and there is no better feeling, especially in such a big game."
