Time-limit on Owen buy-out - Shepherd

Michael Owen´s much-publicised £9.5million buy-out clause only applies until Tuesday - according to former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd, who sanctioned the striker´s contract.

It emerged this summer that the deal offered to Owen - when he signed from Real Madrid two years ago - included the caveat that he could leave if a bid was received in excess of £9.5million. But Shepherd has insisted that only applies until the end of this month.

"Without it, I don´t think we would have done the deal - but it is only valid until July 31," he said of the clause. "After that he would have to stay for another year unless it was in the club´s interests to let him go."
