Middlesbrough defender Jonathan Woodgate should be fit for the start of the new season after undergoing surgery to repair damaged knee cartilage.

On Monday, the 27-year-old had an exploratory operation on his left knee and although he is likely to miss the first fortnight of pre-season training, he is expected to be fit for the opening fixture of the new Barclays Premiership campaign on August 11.

Manager Gareth Southgate told the club´s website, "Jonathan had had a niggle in his knee for the last couple of months of the season. A minor operation to repair slight damage has sorted out the problem and he now has the summer to get himself ready for the new season."
