Manchester United cemented their seven-point cushion at the top of the Premier League table with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Goals from Javier Hernandez and Robin Van Persie proved to be the difference at the DW Stadium, with both strikers scoring braces in the absence of injured England international Robin Van Persie.

The Red Devils were cruising to victory in the first-half, although it took 35 minutes to open the scoring after Ali Al Habsi pushed Patrice Evra’s shot into the path of Hernandez, with the Mexican firing home from close range.

Van Persie doubled the advantage on 43 minutes, with ‘Chicharito’ finding his strike partner who capitalised on a slip from Ivan Ramis and curled the ball home for Manchester United.

The Latics thought they’d got an unlikely lifeline on 59 minutes, but Aruna Kone’s bundled effort at the far post was ruled out for offside after some great work by Franco Di Santo.

That was as good as it got for Roberto Martinez’s side, who conceded again four minutes later. Hernandez slammed the ball home after Van Persie’s free-kick was blocked by the wall, but the Dutchman wasn’t to be outdone by his teammate in the final minutes.

Danny Welbeck found Van Persie with a perfect cut-back, and the striker made no mistake to give Sir Alex Ferguson’s side an excellent win on New Year’s Day.
