Arsenal have not made contact with Southampton over teenage defender Luke Shaw, manager Nigel Adkins has confirmed.

The Saints boss watched his side claim a 1-1 draw against the Gunners on Tuesday, with the eight-cap England U17 international impressing in the New Year’s Day fixture at St Mary’s.

Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen in the left-back position, according to talkSPORT, with the north London club looking to offload Andre Santos in the process during the January transfer window.

However, Adkins was quick to deny reports that he’d spoken with the Frenchman over a move for the academy graduate, insisting his future would be best served on the south coast at this stage.

"No, [Wenger] didn't say anything. As I have said before, Luke is better playing for Southampton Football Club, where he is being nurtured and looked after,” Adkins is quoted as saying by the radio station.

"He is still only 17 and playing in the Premier League, where he is getting an opportunity to flourish, to make some mistakes and to keep kicking on. We have a good culture here. He is under contract. We are not looking to let him go.

"This is best place for him at this point in his career. He has a big, big future in the game, which he demonstrated with his performance against Arsenal the other night.

"If anyone wants to try and do business, all the best dealing with the chairman."

Arsenal have a track record of taking players from the Saints’ academy and bringing them to north London, with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain both first team regulars at the Emirates Stadium after moving in 2006 and 2011 respectively.

Shaw, who would cost the Gunners £5million, according to The Daily Mail, won’t be following in the footsteps of the senior England internationals without a fight however, if the comments of Adkins are to be believed.
