Manchester United transfer target Sven Bender has penned a one-year contract extension at Borussia Dortmund, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

The Bundesliga champions have moved to tie up new deals for two of their key players, defensive midfielder Bender and centre-back Neven Subotic.

Manchester United have been linked with a summer move for Bender, who has represented Germany on two occasions.

But Dortmund have moved to ward off interest in the midfielder, by extending his contract until 2017. His previous deal ran until 2016.

The 23-year-old joined Dortmund from 1860 Munchen in 2009, and has played a key role as Jurgen Klopp's side have won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in the past two seasons.

His impressive performances at the heart of the Dortmund side have led to interest from United, who lack a strong centre-midfield presence of their own.

Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are expected to retire within two years, if not at the end of the current campaign, while Anderson and Darren Fletcher have struggled with injury and consistency.

Michael Carrick has impressed this season, while Tom Cleverley is growing into his role at Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson is still thought to be keen to bolster the middle of the park. The Daily Mail claimed last weekend that Ferguson was lining up a £15m move for Bender to partner Carrick in the Old Trafford midfield.

But the report also suggested Ferguson could turn to PSV midfielder Kevin Strootman if a deal for Bender proved impossible, an option the United boss could excerise now Bender's signed a new Dortmund deal. Subotic, who has partnered Mats Hummels with great success at Dortmund, has extended his deal by two years, from 2014 to 2016.
