Manchester United believe they can still land Crystal Palace youngster Wilfried Zaha ahead of Tottenham despite the north London club gaining a head start in the race for his signature, report the Daily Mail.
Tottenham appeared to have stolen a march on their rivals for Zaha, who is rated at around £20 million by his club, after they reportedly opened negotiations with Palace over the weekend.
The paper reports that Manchester United have struggled to make contact with Palace co-chairman Steve Parish but will up their efforts to negotiate a move when David Gill returns from his holidays. Sir Alex Ferguson will also reportedly try and speak to Zaha personally in order to convince him of a move to Manchester United.
Bidding is expected to start at around £7 million and any deal with either Tottenham or Manchester United will hinge around either club's willingness to loan him back to the Eagles for the remainder of the season in order to help with their promotion push.
The Mail report that Tottenham are willing to do just that before a potential move to White Hart Lane over the summer. Although previously Arsenal and Chelsea had expressed an interest in Zaha, it now appears to be a straight fight between Spurs and the Red Devils for his services.
