Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Genoa defender Andreas Granqvist, according to reports.
The 27-year-old former Wigan centre back has been linked with a return to the Premier League in recent months, with Spurs, the Reds and Sunderland all linked with a move.
However, Sky Sports reports that Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kiev have moved to the front of the queue to sign the player, and have opened discussions with the Serie ‘A’ outfit over bringing the player to the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex.
Indeed, Granqvist is aware of the speculation, and waiting for an update from his agent before making a decision over where his future lies.
"I am happy in Genoa, but it is no secret that I would like to play for a club who play in the Champions League or Europa League,” the defender told Sportbladet.
"I know that Dynamo Kiev and Genoa have been negotiating."
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was linked with a move for the player in December, with The Sun claiming the Reds had been watching the £5million-rated defender.
The Reds aren’t short of options at the back, with Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Sebastian Coates and Jamie Carragher the four senior choices currently available at Anfield.
But, with Carragher moving towards the later stages of his career with Liverpool, the 27-cap Swede could eventually become a replacement for the club legend.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas was linked with a move for the player in the same newspaper report last month, and were also said to be monitoring Granqvist’s progress in Italy.
Spurs are another side with plenty of options at the back, with William Gallas, Steven Caulker, Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen all vying for spots at White Hart Lane.
Granqvist would provide even more competition for places in the Tottenham Hotspur side, but the north London outfit – like their Merseyside rivals – appear set to miss out on this particular target.
