Liverpool have stepped-up their interest in French defender Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, according to reports.

The Times claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers wants the U21 international at Anfield, and rate the possibility of a move during the January transfer window as ‘a decent bet’.

A product of the famous Clairefontaine academy, the player’s agent has previously admitted that his client would be willing to join ‘a big club’ and challenge for trophies.

"Nicolas is ambitious. He wants to join a really big club and win trophies," said Mikkel Beck at the end of December, according to The Daily Mirror.

Liverpool aren’t the only Premier League team to be linked with a move however, with rivals Newcastle United also keen on the player.

The Daily Star Sunday claimed last weekend that manager Alan Pardew has also set his sights on the £5million-rated Valenciennes starlet.

Rodgers isn’t short of defensive options at Liverpool, and were he able to lure the Frenchman to Merseyside, he’d compete for a first team place alongside Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Sebastian Coates and Jamie Carrager.

Indeed, the Reds boss is thought to be in the market for a potential long-term replacement for Carragher, with Andreas Granqvist also reported to be on the Liverpool back in December.
