Real Madrid have made the first move in the race to sign Chelsea defender Ashley Cole in a bid to put together possibly the most formidable left side in world football, with the full-back lining up behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to The Express, Cole’s representatives were holding talks in Madrid on Thursday over a possible Santiago Bernabeu switch in the summer.

The England left-back’s contract expires at the end of the season so he is now free to begin discussions with clubs from outside of the Premier League and could even sign a pre-contract agreement with Jose Mourinho’s side.

Cole has reportedly only been offered a one-year deal by Roman Abramovich and is holding out for a two-year extension and this latest report suggests he is willing to move abroad to get what he wants.

The 32-year-old is also reportedly being chased by Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Manchester City and Manchester United, as well as Ligue 1 big-spenders Paris St Germain.

The prospect of Cole lining up with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid will be a mouth-watering one for los Blancos fans.
