Chelsea fans’ disagreements over Torres get physical

The continuing poor form of Fernando Torres is causing ructions and “scuffles” among Chelsea fans, according to the Chelsea Supporters Group (CSG).

CSG chair Trizia Fiorellino claimed a large number of fans booed Torres when he was withdrawn in the League Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Fiorellino claimed the atmosphere among Blues fans was “toxic” and disagreements over the criticism Torres was receiving even turned into physical confrontation.

She also feels the failure of Rafael Benitez to get the best out of the Spain international is causing Chelsea supporters to rediscover their ire over his appointment.

What split the fans was Torres, and the moment when he came off. I'm torn, I could never boo a player in a blue shirt but I can understand those who booed him,” she is quoted as saying in the Independent.

“We have backed him unequivocally for two years and made every excuse under the sun for him, perhaps he was not match fit.

"A lot of fans think Benitez's appointment was to get the best out of him and if anything he's become more immobile, it's like he has given up.

“There are a lot who feel like me [and couldn't boo] but half the ground was booing. It did cause arguments and scuffles.

“There was a bit of pushing and some people moved to avoid scuffles. It was a sad state of affairs."

Chelsea fans were calling for the introduction of new signing Demba Ba throughout the second half, but it was not until the 81st minute before Benitez decided to withdraw the misfiring Torres for the Senegal international.

As it happened, Ba could not make the difference in attack and Swansea’s Danny Graham even managed to double the lead new sensation Michu had given the visitors in the first half.

Chelsea’s job of getting their season back on track will not get any easier as their next game is the Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
