Charlton Athletic hosted managerless Blackpool on Saturday, after the Seasiders lost Michael Appleton to Blackburn Rovers less than 24 hours prior to the kick-off at the Valley.

Johnnie Jackson and Scott Wagstaff both scored before half-time to set the hosts on their way to victory against a young Tangerines outfit.

Nathan Eccleston struck an injury-time consolation, but it will have done little for caretaker manager Steve Thompson’s mood post-match.

Jackson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with his sixth goal of the campaign, a low shot into the bottom corner past Matt Gilks.

In first half injury time Yann Kermorgant’s header was parried by the same keeper, but Wagstaff was on hand to double the home team's lead and affectively seal a home win.

Eccleston’s impressive volley in injury time was too little, too late for the visitors.

Speaking to the Charlton Athletic website, Chris Powell said: “I’ve just realised it was our first double. We obviously had a number of them last year but it’s always good to have that, and it was fully deserved.

“We worked hard this week after the cup defeat [against Huddersfield Town] and one or two players came in for first starts in the Championship against a Blackpool team that has got some dangerous players.

“There are some wily old foxes like Kevin Phillips, who still knows the game. They play a certain way and they are one of the teams in the Championship that have their own style. But after maybe a bit of a pensive start, I felt we grew into it and got two very good goals to put us in front.”

Highly-rated England U21 winger Thomas Ince put in another good shift in the Npower Championship, despite being shackled by an organised Addicks defence. It remains to be seen if he remains in the division come February 1st.
