An unidentified Premier League footballer who won more than £100,000 in prize money on the National Lottery has chosen to remain anonymous, reports the Daily Mail.

The unnamed player - understood to be a household name, who plays for an English top-flight club - was one of ten people to scoop a cool £125,942 after correctly picking five numbers and the bonus ball in a draw before Christmas.

However, the high-profile star is keen to keep his identity secret because of the potential stick he could get from rival fans.

After the shy footballer collected his cheque this week, he activated the non-publicity clause that the National Lottery offers to all winners, meaning his identity will be kept secret from the public and the press.

A National Lottery spokesman told the Daily Star Sunday: "Unless a winner chooses to take publicity then no details are released.

"We are therefore unable to confirm or deny any winner rumours."

Many top Premier League players earn a similar sum in the space of just one week, but the news is sure to spark a nationwide guessing game amongst players and fans, with Premier League dressing rooms all over the country rife with speculation as people try to work who the lucky winner could be.
