Manchester City set defender sights on Manchester United transfer target

Manchester City are being linked with a move for Manchester United defender target Mats Hummels.

The Daily Mirror claims Citizens boss Roberto Mancini has set his sights on a centre back, with just two senior players available in the position if captain Vincent Kompany’s appeal against a red card fails.

The Belgian international was controversially sent off against Arsenal at the weekend, and could now serve a three-match ban if referee Mike Dean’s decision is upheld.

Hummels is amongst a number of potential targets, with Borussia Dortmund teammate Neven Subotic another player mooted to be of interest to Manchester City in the report.

A move for Hummels would be of particular Premier League interest however, given his link to arch-rivals Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson was tracking the player towards the end of 2012, and sent Red Devils scouts to watch the German international in action in November, according to The Daily Express.

Were he to move to Old Trafford this month, he’d follow in the footsteps of Shinji Kagawa, who swapped the Bundesliga for Manchester United in the summer.

However, it’s ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City who now appear to be considering a first move for the player.
