Liverpool appear set to miss out on Vegard Forren after initially appearing in pole position to sign the defender.

Sky Sports reports that the Norwegian centre back’s trial at Anfield has been cancelled after a bid from Southampton was lodged for the 24-year-old.

And, whilst Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that a deal is yet to be finalised with the Saints, the former Manchester United star did admit that an agreement was very close. The Daily Mail reports that it's a transfer fee close to £4.2million.

"There have been many inquiries from various English clubs, but Southampton submitted an offer, it was very interesting for us and Vegard," Solskjaer told Romsdals Budstikke.

"We are more or less agreed with the club, but nothing is a hundred per cent confirmed. Molde is close to a deal, so we'll see if this is something that all the three parties will go on."

The news will be a blow to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who was set to watch the five-cap international train with his players on Merseyside today (Tuesday) before considering a long-term offer.

Liverpool have options in defence in the shape of Jamie Carragher, Sebastian Coates, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, but Forren would have added extra cover in the position this season whilst also serving as a player for the future post-Carragher on Merseyside.

It appears that the Reds will miss out however, along with Everton, Fulham and Sunderland, who have also been linked. QPR boss Harry Redknapp is another manager who was said to be keen, but it's Nigel Adkins who has made the move first for the St. Mary's outfit.
