Former Chelsea assistant expecting Torres-Falcao swap deal

Chelsea have only signed Demba Ba as a precursor to a potential swap deal involving Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao or Edinson Cavani, according to former Blues assistant manager Ray Wilkins.

Ba signed for Chelsea in the opening week of the January transfer window to provide support for Torres, but the Spaniard's performance levels have dropped significantly since the arrival of the Senegalese from Newcastle.

The former West Ham forward has scored three goals in his first four appearances for Chelsea - a tally it took Torres 25 games to reach - and Ba could be joined by another potent goalscoring in the next transfer window.

Chelsea continue to be linked with a summer swoop for Falcao or Cavani, although predominantly the Atletico Madrid striker, and Wilkins expects a trade for Torres at the end of the season.

With Torres having scored only 26 goals in 102 appearances for Chelsea since his £50 million transfer from Liverpool, Wilkins now believes owner Roman Abramovich will give up on his record signing.

"I would love to say [Torres] has still got a future at the club because he once was a dynamic centre forward, but unfortunately that hasn't been the case at Chelsea so I'm a little bit disappointed for him," Wilkins, who was No.2 to Carlo Ancelotti when Chelsea signed Torres, told

"Demba Ba is a fantastic stop-gap but I think they'll probably use Torres as a bit of a makeweight when they end up going for Falcao or Cavani.

"The likes of Falcao and Cavani are very, very expensive, but those two centre forwards are probably the ones that can take Chelsea to the next step once again."

He added: "Obviously the benefit from Falcao coming is that [Torres] would be going back to Madrid where he started his footballing career. He'd be going home, and Chelsea would be getting an absolutely splendid centre-forward."

Falcao, 26, has scored 58 goals in 70 appearances for Atletico Madrid, and was the only non Real Madrid or Barcelona player to be named int the FIFA/FIFPro World XI for 2012.
