Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is relishing the chance to go up against Manchester United’s Robin van Persie on Sunday.

The centre-back signed from Ajax in the summer was filling in at left-back in the Spurs win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s side at Old Trafford earlier in the season, so is looking forward to the task of containing the Premier League’s leading scorer - Vertonghen also scored the opening goal of the 3-2 victory.

The win masterminded by Andres Villas-Boas in Spetember was the first time a side from White Hart Lane has come away from Old Trafford with all three points since 1989 and Vertonghen is confident his side can do the double this season.

United travel to north London on Sunday, weather permitting, for the showpiece fixture of the weekend.

The Belgium international is under no illusions about how difficult a task containing the league leaders will be, but is looking forward to the challenge of trying to mark Manchester United’s new talisman.

“I don’t recall ever marking Robin before. This is why I came to the Premier League, to face players like that,” Vertonghen said in an interview with the London Evening Standard.

“I know these players well and then it’s just about quality — we will see who is better.”

The 25-year-old believes that Spurs are more resolute as a whole and feels the attacking threat of Jermain Defoe, Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale will trouble a United defence that has struggled to keep clean sheets so far this season.

“They’ve let in a lot of goals this season, more than ever. Our win there gave us confidence for this game,” he added.

“They have scored a lot of goals this year but we have a very strong attack, maybe one of the best in the League, and we’re much tighter at the back so those two things give us the confidence maybe to beat United.”

Tottenham are currently fourth in the Premier League, just two points behind Chelsea and will be hoping local rivals Arsenal can get a result when they travel to Stamford Bridge in the earlier kick-off on Sunday.
