The winter break in Holland appears to have affected PSV Eindhoven adversely as their defeat to struggling PEC Zwolle saw an incredible TRIPLE miss with just the goalkeeper in front of them.

PSV, managed by Dick Advocaat, were sitting pretty at the top of the Eredivisie going into the month off they take over the Christmas and New Year in the Netherlands.

A first game back against inferior PEC will have been seen as a straightforward match to ease back into the business of winning the league title.

However, the minnows had other ideas and shocked Advocaat’s side when they took the lead at the Phillips Stadion in the first half. PSV were expected to go on and win when Tim Matavz equalised just before half-time, but Zwolle came out all guns blazing after the break and took the lead again.

PSV had the chance to restore parity almost straight away when the incredible triple sitter miss occurred; Matavz should have scored from close range but was foiled by goalkeeper Diederick Boer, the ball fell to Dries Mertens but his awful finish went straight at Boer lying on the ground and was followed by Jeremain Lens’ comically bundling the ball wide with the goal gaping.

The home crowd couldn’t believe what they were seeing and things duly got worse as Zwolle proceeded to go up the other end a few minutes later to score a third.

The game finished 3-1 to the away side and PSV gave the chasing pack a chance to catch up on them.
