Cristiano Ronaldo scored a terrific brace as Real Madrid thrashed Valencia 5-0 on Sunday, with all the goals coming in the first half of the Primera Division clash.

Jose Mourinho’s side were on fire as they stormed to victory following a sensational first half performance and their star man was instrumental in them taking advantage of Barcelona’s shock loss to Real Sociedad on Saturday.

It now means the gap between Real and Barça has been cut to 15 points but there is still a mountain to climb for Mourinho’s charges.

They did what they needed to do at the Mestalla, however, and Cristiano Ronaldo was instrumental in them taking a lead in only the eight minute, starting the breakaway that saw Gonzalo Higuain finish off.

The Portugal captain was provider for the second as his low cross was turned in by Angel di Maria 25 minutes later, which was a spark for the floodgates to open.

Ronaldo got in on the act just two minutes later with a sharp finish in at the near post to make it three and was on the end of a brilliant team goal to take a 4-0 lead four minutes before half time.

The rout was rounded off in first half injury time when Di Maria bagged his second of the match, slotting home coolly after Valencia’s defence was ripped open for the umpteenth time.

The second half was not quite so exciting and Mourinho’s men strolled through it to chip away a bit of Barcelona’s lead – there’s still a long way to go to retain their title though.
