Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is being chased by Bundesliga side Stuttgart and could be the subject of a bid this month.

The Italian has failed to live up to his early promise at Old Trafford and is not getting near Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team following failed loan spells at QPR and Serie A side Sampdoria.

Stuttgart’s director of sport, former Germany international Fredi Bobic, confirmed that his side were looking to strengthen in attack and admitted he had been looking at the United youngster with a view to improving their options up front.

“We have been watching him for a while now; He is one of the players we have on our shortlist,” he told the Stuttgart Nachrichten newspaper.

Macheda burst onto the scene in spectacular fashion at Old Trafford in 2009 when he scored a fantastic last-minute winning goal in a Premier League match with Aston Villa.

The 21-year-old was tipped as the next big talent to emerge from the Red Devils’ youth ranks, but he is yet to realise the promise he showed and his career has tailed off somewhat over the past two years.

Ferguson has an abundance of attacking talent in his ranks at Old Trafford, with the likes of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez all standing in Macheda’s way of first team action.
