England striker Theo Walcott celebrated the signing of his new long-term contract, by scoring in the London Derby against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Arsenal man told “I am very pleased my future is sorted.

“But it is all about the present now.”

The present at the Emirates Stadium is looking bleak at the moment, as they sit sixth in the Barclays Premier League table, following the 2-1 loss to Chelsea.

Walcott said: “We didn’t really start until the second half.

“It’s a shame that we conceded two sloppy goals and then woke up a bit.”

Those goals came through Juan Mata and a penalty from Frank Lampard, with both goals being highly controversial.

Prior to Mata bursting into the box and chipping the ball over Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, all the Arsenal players felt that they should have been awarded a free-kick for Ramires’ challenge on Francis Coquelin.

Ramires was again mixed up in controversy, when many believed the Brazilian midfielder had dived to gain the penalty that doubled Chelsea’s lead.

Walcott said: “That’s the disappointing thing.

“We dominated the second half and it is just a shame that we could not get the equaliser that we probably deserved.”

This defeat is their second loss on the trot, after falling short last week against reigning champions Manchester City.

However, the Gunners still have a game in hand against West Ham, which was postponed on Boxing Day.

The two go head-to-head on Wednesday with Arsenal needing all three points to maintain their chances of gaining Champions League football next year, with manager Arsene Wenger likely to keep his faith in Theo Walcott.

The England star said: “There are a lot of teams that have got stronger this year, so we need to step on the gas. We don’t want to be playing catch-up.”
