Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Ashley Young and Jonny Evans will miss Manchester United's FA Cup fourth round match against Fulham on Saturday.

The Old Trafford boss revealed both players have returned to light training, and took part in sessions during United's warm-weather training trip to Qatar.

But both players are not yet ready to return to first-team action, according to Ferguson.

Speaking at his weekly press conference at Manchester United's Carrington training ground, Ferguson said: "Jonny Evans and Ashley Young are still not 100 per cent fit.

"We had a good week training in Qatar and it was a great time to go there - we couldn't have picked a better moment actually when you consider the weather we've had here.

"So it's worked out very well for us and hopefully we get the benefit from that. It was always the plan at some stage to do that this January. It couldn't have worked out better for us.

"Ashley Young is not far away. He trained a bit in Qatar. Not a lot, but at least he is on the road back and he has always been an important player for us."

"Jonny is just taking a bit longer than we thought. But he did a bit of training in Qatar. Again, not a lot, but he is on the way back. The bonus for us, of course, is that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are both back. So we're not bad in that department."

Manchester United face Fulham twice in the space of a week, as they take on Martin Jol's side in the FA Cup this weekend, before travelling to Craven Cottage in the Premier League the following Saturday.

In between the two fixtures, Southampton travel to Old Trafford, hoping to become the first team since Tottenham to take points off the Premier League leaders at home.

And Manchester United face a busy few weeks over the next month, as they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16.

And when asked if Young and Evans would be fit to face the La Liga champions, Ferguson was more confident. He said: "Both of them will be fit for that. I would hope to have a fully fit squad by the time those games come around."
