Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed the five best players he has played alongside during the course of his illustrious career for club and country.

Ferdinand has been fortunate to feature in the same team as some of the greats of the modern game, but has managed to whittle down his favourites to an impressive shortlist.

Speaking to 5Magazine, Ferdinand chooses Manchester United stars current and past, and also picks one of England's most popular players ever.

Here are Rio's choices, and his reasons for each…

Cristiano Ronaldo

"Unbelievable player. He can do everything; score with both feet, header, run at people, take people on. Great professional - one of the hardest working professionals I've played with."

Paul Scholes

"My favourite player to play with in terms of enjoying watching. [I like] giving him the ball and just saying: 'go and do your thing [and] dictate games'."

Ryan Giggs

"Another player who has played for so many years at the top level. Great passer of the ball, great deliverer of crosses, great professional."

Edwin van der Sar

"The best 'keeper I've played with, definitely. He made the game just so easy, effortless. [His] positioning was fantastic."

Paul Gascoigne

"He was a great player. I got him at the back end of his career, but he was one of my heroes as a kid. I got to make my England debut with him, so I'll never forget that."
