After two games without a win, many thought Barcelona and Lionel Messi could be in trouble when travelling to Malaga for their finely poised Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg, especially with a semi-final against Real Madrid at stake – they were wrong.

Although a talented Malaga did keep the tie in the balance for a long period, the Catalan club’s quality shone through in the end and a magnificent last twenty minutes made the game and tie safe with a 4-2 win, all rounded off with a rare Messi header.

The Argentinean nodded in the fourth to round off the win but some marvellous give-and-go between Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas produced the pick of the goals with Barcelona’s third to finally kill off the home side’s fight back.

Malaga had drawn level twice through Joaquin and Roque Santa Cruz after a close-range Pedro header and nice Gerard Pique control and finish had given the Camp Nou side the lead.

Drawing level for a third time was just one step too far for Manuel Pellegrini’s team and Barcelona prevailed to set up a huge semi-final against big rivals Real Madrid.
