Sir Alex Ferguson believes that with the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney at his disposal, the current crop of Manchester United players are the greatest assembled during his illustrious Old Trafford tenure.

The summer acquisition of Van Persie from Arsenal has been significant dividends for Manchester United, with the Dutchman's goals inspiring the Red Devils to the summit of the Premier League and keeping them in both the FA Cup and Champions League.

Along with Van Persie, Manchester United's goalscoring department also boasts Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck - all players, says Ferguson, who are capable of reaching 20 goals this season.

"When you look at those lads up front, if they can each get to the 20 mark, we will really be in business," Ferguson said, as reported by

Van Persie has already broken the 20-goal barrier for Manchester United this term, while Rooney's strike in the weekend's FA Cup victory over Fulham was his ninth in all competitions.

Hernandez, meanwhile, has scored 12 times in 23 appearances while Welbeck - with a more limited role than his counterparts - has found the net on just one occasion.

The depth of quality up front at Manchester United is clear but, adds Ferguson, he now has greater options in all positions than he has ever had in 26 years with the club.

He commented: "The options we've got now all round the park, if we can keep everyone fit, are as good as I've had in my time here."
