Chelsea are reportedly considering an approach for Birmingham City goalkeeper Jack Butland before the transfer deadline, while the youngster continues to be linked with Liverpool.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool have been offered the opportunity to sign Butland but have yet to commit to a deal, which could provide Chelsea with an opportunity to pounce before the close of the transfer window.

Chelsea could reportedly bring Butland, who was one of the top performers for Stuart Pearce's Great Britain side during the Olympics, to Stamford Bridge for as little as £3 million.

Birmingham are deep in the financial mire and are desperate to raise funds as quickly as possible, with the sale of Butland, 19, the most likely way to provide a short-term fix.

Chelsea, however, already have experienced shot-stopper Petr Cech and highly-rated youngster Thibaut Courtois among their number, but are reportedly looking at Butland should they unexpectedly lose one of their current crop.

Courtois is earning rave reviews for his performances on loan with Atletico Madrid, and has been linked with transfers to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.

Liverpool have reportedly outlined Butland as a long-term successor to Pepe Reina, who has had his future at Anfield called into question at various points this season.
