Lionel Messi proved once more than anything Cristiano Ronaldo could do, he could do better as the Argentinian genius scored four for Barcelona against Osasuna just hours after his Real Madrid rival bagged a hat-trick against Getafe.
Messi’s goals, which came in a 5-1 win for Barcelona to help re-establish their 15-point lead at the top of the table, mean he has now scored in his last 11 La Liga games, a new record.
The 25-year-old reached 200 La Liga goals with his second of the night, becoming just the eighth player to do so in Spanish league history. He is also the youngest to reach the milestone by some margin.
His four last night now also mean that Messi has more goals on his own this season (33) than all but two La Liga sides - Atletico and Real Madrid - excluding Barcelona.
Messi got his first of the night with just 11 minutes on the clock, and although Osasuna surprisingly levelled things up 13 minutes later through Raoul Loe, the Argentinian soon grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and didn’t let go.
The diminutive forward got his second of the game just three minutes later from the spot after Alejandro Arribas handled in the penalty area – a deed which earned him a second yellow and an early bath.
Three goals followed before the hour-mark, with Messi netting twice in the second half after Pedro had bagged his side’s third before half-time.
Messi’s four goals mean he has now struck 22 hat-tricks for Barcelona, three more than Ronaldo who claimed his 19th in the white of Madrid against Getafe earlier on Sunday.
After an uninspiring first half the Portuguese forward ran riot, scoring three times in 10 minutes; one each with his left foot, right foot and head.
Victories for both Real Madrid and Barcelona mean the gap between the pair in La Liga remains at 15 points, with Atletico Madrid sandwiched between them, 11 points adrift of Tito Vilanova’s side.
