Andre Villas-Boas is ready to sanction a £20m bid for Internacional forward Leandro Damiao, according to the Daily Star.

The Spurs boss is set to turn to Damiao as he looks to bolster his forward line - with Jermain Defoe sidelined with a hip injury and Emmanuel Adebayor at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Tottenham manager is short of options.

The north London club are well-placed to mount a challenge for a top four Champions League qualification spot this season - they currently sit fourth, three points clear of fifth-placed Everton - and the report claims Villas-Boas wants another striker to consolidate the club's position.

Spurs have previously played down the likelihood of signing Damiao, but the Daily Star claim the club is working hard behind the scenes to land the forward this month.

Damiao is valued at £20m by Internacional, who have turned down offers for the striker from Spurs in the past, but Villas-Boas is hopeful a deal can be concluded before the close of the transfer window next week.

But the report claims the Spurs boss is ready to turn to Sevilla frontman Alvaro Negredo, should negotiations over Damiao fail to reach a positive conclusion.

Tottenham made their first major signing of the window earlier this week - Schalke star Lewis Holtby was set to join in the summer, but Spurs have paid £1.5m to his German club to bring him to the Premier League six months earlier than originally planned.

Villas-Boas's side travel to Carrow Road on Wednesday to take on Norwich in the Premier League, hoping to put the disappointment of their 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Leeds behind them.
