Video: Juventus miss out on cup final after incredible injury-time miss

Juventus exited the Coppa Italia at the hands of Lazio on Tuesday night, with a disastrous open goal miss in injury time making their semi-final elimination pain even worse.

Claudio Marchisio was the guilty party in the 95th minute, with the Serie A champions trailing 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate, where his haplessness saw Antonio Conte’s side miss out on a place in the final.

The Italy international may claim he should not have needed to finish off the move as Sebastian Giovinco forced a brilliant save out of Biancocelesti ‘keeper Federico Marchetti when he really should have buried the chance.

Marchetti’s save rebounded to the feet of Marchisio just a yard out on the far post but the 27-year-old midfielder, somehow, could only manage to direct the ball wide.

It was an astonishing double miss and the look on Marchisio’s face told a tale, as well as the reaction of Arturo Vidal in the aftermath.

Vidal earlier thought he had saved his side with a dramatic late equaliser in the 92nd minute after Alvaro Gonzalez’s opener just after half time.

However, it only proved to be the first event in a quite unbelievable finale that was finished off with Marchisio’s incredible miss.

Vidal was ecstatic at his injury time strike but this quickly turned to despair as Lazio re-took the lead in the 93rd minute through a Sergio Floccari header.

Juventus would have booked a place in the final on away goals had Marchisio managed to find the net from a yard out – he will not be forgetting this miss any time soon.
