Lampard chasing Chelsea goals record

Whilst Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw against Reading was another night to forget for Chelsea, it moved midfielder Frank Lampard a step closer to the club’s all-time goalscoring record.

The England international’s header past Adam Federici made it 196 and counting for the Blues legend – six behind the 202 total set by Bobby Tambling over 11 years between 1959 and 1970.

Lampard, the club’s record goalscorer in the Premier League, has scored 135 times in the English top flight since arriving in 2001. Additionally, he has 25 goals in the FA Cup, 24 in European competitions and 11 in the League Cup. His other strike came in the FA Community Shield.

However, time is slowly ticking away from the central midfielder, whose Stamford Bridge career appears to be coming to an end. The 34-year-old is out of contract in west London at the end of the season, and a new offer has not been placed in front of the former West Ham starlet.

His form suggests that the record is still possible though, with Lampard scoring nine goals in his last 11 Premier League starts.

Much could depend on whether interim manager Rafa Benitez continues to give Lampard opportunities to play, with the Blues not short of options in midfield.

Bit, whilst nobody is un-droppable, Lampard’s recent form suggests it would be crazy to not keep him involved in first team activity.

Then again, it would seem crazy to not give him a new contract.
