Wayne Rooney’s brace against Southampton was important for a number of reasons – most notably securing a 2-1 win and moving Manchester United seven-points clear at the top of the Premier League.
But, whilst it was a good night for the team, it was also a great one for the individual. Rooney’s first strike was his 100th at home for the Red Devils, and his second took him past George Best into sixth on the list of all-time league scorers for the club.
Rooney signed for United in 2004, and in the eight-and-a-half years that have followed, the England international has scored some quite brilliant goals in front of his home fans.
For the player himself, one in particular sticks out – an overhead kick against local rivals Manchester City that was voted the greatest goal in the Premier League era.
“After scoring 100 goals at Old Trafford, my favourite has to be the overhead against Manchester City,” he wrote on his official Facebook page.
“It was just instinct as the ball came over from Nani.”
And, to celebrate Rooney’s landmark achievement, GiveMeFootball has decided to pick the striker’s top five goals at Old Trafford.
Let us know which is your favourite at the bottom of the article, and if we’ve missed out your favourite…
5. Manchester United 3-1 Manchester City
League Cup semi-final, second leg; 25/01/10
Whilst it was an absolute sitter for Rooney, you can’t put a price on big goals against local rivals.
And, with Manchester City starting to spend some serious money, this was a huge moment to show that United were still the team to beat in this particular part of England.
Carlos Tevez scored against his old club as the match looked destined for extra-time, but Rooney nodded home from a Ryan Giggs cross when it mattered to make it 4-3 on aggregate.
4. Manchester United 2-1 Portsmouth
FA Cup fourth round; 27/01/07
Rooney bagged a brace in the clash against Pompey, but his second goal, which would turn out to be the match-winner, was simply sublime.
After a nice piece of build-up play, the ball was fed to the United forward, who turned, took a couple of touches and chipped diagonally over the head of David James.
3. Manchester United 3-0 Middlesbrough
FA Cup fourth round; 29/01/05
Rooney scored a decent chip against Boro in 2007, but this volley in 2005 gets the nod from us because of the brilliant technique on display.
A long-ball gets nodded across goal for the striker, who connects with the outside of his right foot. Mark Schwarzer has no chance as the ball flashed past him.
2. Manchester United 2-1 Newcastle United
Premier League; 24/04/05
If the volley against Middlesbrough was good, then this one against the Magpies was simply sensational.
Losing 1-0 and arguing with the referee, Rooney quickly turned his attention to the game and lashed an unstoppable shot past Shay Given. It turned the game on its head, with the Red Devils winning 2-1.
1. Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City
Premier League; 12/02/11
It’s hard to argue with the man himself, because Rooney’s goal against the ‘noisy neighbours’ was a little bit special.
Nani’s speculative cross was behind the striker, but he turned his body, swung his right boot and the rest is history, with keeper Joe Hart having absolutely no chance. Enjoy…
