Fulham v Manchester United: Match preview

Premier League

Craven Cottage

Saturday, February 2. Kick-off: 17:30

Manchester United will not have to face Dimitar Berbatov, who joined Fulham last summer, with the Bulgarian striker nursing a hamstring injury.

There is more bad news for Martin Jol with Steve Sidwell, Mahamadou Diarra, Kerim Frei and Kieran Richardson also missing.

However, potential positive news comes in the form of Urby Emanuelson, who could make his debut after joining on loan from AC Milan.

Manchester United are able to call upon Jonny Evans, who has not played since the FA Cup meeting with West Ham on January 5, with the Northern Irishman recovered from injury.

Rio Ferdinand may return to the starting line-up after being displaced by Chris Smalling for the defeat of Southampton at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Manchester United will, however, be without Ashley Young, who has a knee problem.

Rooney: We must be at our best against Fulham

Manchester United face Fulham on Saturday just seven days after dismantling Martin Jol's side in the FA Cup, but Wayne Rooney knows the Cottagers will be a different prospect entirely a week on.

Rooney was on target as Manchester United triumphed 4-1 at Old Trafford - with Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez (2) - also finding the net, but Craven Cottage has proven a difficult place to go for the Premier League leaders in recent times.

United have won only once in their last four visits to Fulham in the league and, says Rooney, will need to be at the very to of their game to over come their hosts this weekend.

"At home, Fulham are a different team,” Rooney told "It’s always a difficult game there. It’s a smaller pitch and a compact stadium. That suits them.

"They’ve got players who can take the ball between the lines because the pitch isn’t as big and then create chances. It will be a completely different game [to the one at Old Trafford].

"They are down near the bottom so they will be fighting to get one or three points. We will need to make sure we are at our best to beat them."
