Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that left-back Andre Santos still has a future at the club, despite the signing of Nacho Monreal.
Wenger made a transfer deadline day signing after Kieran Gibbs was ruled out for six weeks with a thigh injury.
And late last night, the Gunners were able to bring in Malaga defender Nacho Monreal, putting Santos' long-term future in doubt.
The Brazilian full-back has been under a lot of pressure from Arsenal fans as they are starting to lose patience with his errors and sloppy defensive displays.
After coming on against Liverpool mid-week following an injury to first-choice Gibbs, the Brazilian got a mixed reception from the fans at the Emirates Stadium.
The crowd made themselves clear that they are not happy with how Santos is currently performing at the club, but Wenger insists that he still has a future at the club.
"Maybe people speak that he had a difficult game [against Liverpool] but he lacks competition," said the Arsenal manager.
"He is a style of player who needs competition because he is not a nervous type of player, he is a stamina type of player and get sharper through competition.
"Yes [the criticism of Santos is unfair] because if you watch the game again and you analyse very well his performance, you will be less critical.
"The first critics after the game are always a bit emotional because you have one or two big mistakes in your mind and we are all the same on that front.
"But when you watch the games again, you will see that he has done some good things."
Arsenal face Stoke City at the Emirates tomorrow afternoon, and it is widely anticipated that deadline day arrival Monreal will make his debut for the club, ahead of the under-fire Santos.
